York Trip 2017
It was only 5:00am on Monday 22 May when 19 very excited kids set off from Drumhillery PS for York. After calling for the other children at Churchill PS we made our way to the boat at Belfast and sailed at 7:30am. We enjoyed a sumptuous breakfast on board and relaxed during a very smooth crossing, before docking at Cainryan at 10:00am. We then travelled down to York, arriving at approximately 4pm. Before going to the hotel we went to the National Railway Museum for a self guided tour, followed by a fun and interactive Science display. A very weary bunch of travellers finally arrived at our hotel, The Wheatlands Lodge, at 6:00pm. After having tea there was some time to unpack and enjoy some time in our rooms, before a walk down to a local play area to expend any remaining energy.
Day 2 was action packed, with a fascinating tour of the stunning Yorkminster Cathedral in the morning, followed by visits to the York Chocolate Story (lots of samples enjoyed!) and the Jorvik Viking Centre. The latter was enjoyed all the more since it is currently the topic studied by KS 2 at our school.
Day 3 was undoubtedly the highlight, a full day at Flamingoland and Zoo. It was a great day to be there, not only because of the beautiful sunshine (which we enjoyed all week) but also because the park wasn't very crowded and so the children had very few queues to contend with. After tea we all had a relaxing boat cruise on the River Ouse in York.
Our final day began with a visit to Eden Camp, a really interesting WW2 museum which actually housed prisoners of war during WW2. After a 2 hour stop here we began the long journey to the boat, arriving at 7:00pm. Again we really appreciated the delicious meal served up by Stena after we set sail.
The boat docked at 9:45am in Belfast and headed for Churchill PS first and then on to Drumhillery, arriving at 11:25pm. Everyone was exhausted but a super week was had by all and there were memories a plenty to cherish! Well done to everyone for their enthusiastic participation and excellent behaviour.
