The importance of Literacy

Literacy in Drumhillery PS focuses on developing each child’s ability to understand and use language as an integral part of learning in all areas in order to interact effectively with the world around them, to express themselves creatively and to communicate confidently (through talking and listening, readingand writing) using a variety of skills and media. Language and Literacy are fundamental prerequisites for thinking, learning and interacting in personal, social and work contexts throughout life. Literacy is therefore a key to learning as well as a key to enjoyment and personal growth.

We strive to use every opportunity to promote Literacy in our school. World Book Day for example is a great opportunity to stimulate the children's interest in reading, for example dressing up as book characters, having an author visit our school or perhaps even having a 'Book Swop.' The Scholastic Book Club is also used regularly to offer pupils the chance to avail of the latest titles, as is our yearly Travelling Book Club. Wall displays regularly highlight the books enjoyed by all classes and we always look out for our special anniversaries or events to provide further motivation, for example we enjoyed a visit from the Konflux Theatre Company recently who delivered a Creative Learning Workshop and a 'Play In a Day,' all related to the 100th anniversary of Roald Dahl's birth. Links with local libraries are also fostered.

We analyse children's test scores to see who needs extra support in Literacy and this provided in many ways. Individual Education Plans are drawn up where required and extra tuition is provided by the EA Literacy Peripatetic Service (twice weekly)or our own teachers in highly successful 'Booster Group' sessions.

Some very  transition work has recently been carried out as part of the CPD (Cross Phase Development) program with Newtownhamilton HS and local contributory primary schools, particularly in the area of Extended Writing. It is hoped to continue this excellent collaboration during 2016-17

NI Libraries Van

We are delighted to have the NI Libraries Van calling with us on a fortnightly basis from September (dates are on our school website calendar). This card can be used in other NI Libraries as well so we would encourage you to afford your children this vital opportunity to enhance their reading skills.
